** THE TRANSFORMERS TOY LIST **

PARALLEL DEVELOPMENT

In the beginning, the Japanese and European Transformers toy lines closely mirrored the American ones. But in the late '80s, as the toys' popularity was declining in America, the European and Japanese product lines continued to thrive. Not wanting to give up a good thing when they saw it, Hasbro and Takara continued to release Transformers toys in their respective markets. To make things even more complicated, the different markets started to feature different colors, different names, and different toys all together. Oy vey!

To help toy hunters looking for overseas markets, each year's listing includes sub-sections for the European and Japanese toy lines. Unless otherwise noted in the text, you can assume that all toys listed in the American release were also shipped in the same year to Europe and Japan with no major differences.

1984 - Transformers Year 1

(The Transformers arrive on Earth. To help blend in with the natives, they get Earthbound transformations. The sensation begins...)

van/ambulance
AUTOBOTS
Optimus Prime (Autobot leader) Red Freightliner COE Dual-Axle Tractor Truck with Grey trailer with Roller - Six-wheeled car with Combat Deck - Grey trailer/platform/repair bay
Bluestreak Grey Datsun 280ZX
Hound Green Army Mitsubishi J59 jeep
Ironhide Red Toyota Previa (Nissan Onebox) van
Jazz White Porsche 935 Turbo
Mirage Blue F-1 Ligier JS25 (JS11) Formula 1 racer

Sunstreaker Yellow Lamborghini Countach LP500S ("Super Tuning", exposed rear engine)
Trailbreaker Black Datsun P/U (Toyota 4WD Hilux)
Wheeljack White Lancia Stratos Turbo racing car
(Unconfirmed rumors of blue Bluestreaks continue to haunt the fan community. The Bluestreak prototype used by Hasbro was colored blue, but none of the blue toys have even been found in a sealed box. Adding to the confusion is the existence of blue Diaclone "Bluestreak" toys, which some people have mistaken for authentic Transformers-released Bluestreak toys. At the time of this writing, the evidence supporting authentic blue Bluestreak toys is all but nonexistent, and should be considered a myth.)
Jetfire White jet (Based on the Super Valkyrie VF-1S jet from the Japanese Macross animated series.)
Brawn - Mini Bot Green Land Rover Defender 4 x 4
Bumblebee - Mini Bot Yellow Volkswagen Beetle
"Bumper" - Mini Bot Yellow Mazda Familia 1500XG
Cliffjumper - Mini Bot Red Toyota (Porsche 924 Turbo)
Gears - Mini Bot Blue 4WD off-road truck
Huffer - Mini Bot Orange tractor cab
Windcharger - Mini Bot Red Trans Am
(Red "Bumblebee"s and Yellow "Cliffjumper"s exist, due to leftover stock from Takara's Microman line. They are mispackaged [example: a red Bumblebee sold as Cliffjumper], and are considered rare. There is also a yellow Mini Bot that does not look like either Bumblebee or Cliffjumper, but was sold as Cliffjumper. This toy is unofficially called "Bumblejumper" or "Bumper" by collectors.)
"4WD Type" - Mini Spy Blue/White/Yellow Jeep
"Buggy Type" - Mini Spy Blue/White/Yellow Dune Buggy
"FX-1 Type" - Mini Spy Blue/White/Yellow Mazda FX-1
"Porsche Type" - Mini Spy Blue/White/Yellow Porsche
(The Mini Spies were free premiums packaged with the Mini Bots, and were the first toys to carry the Autobot/Decepticon "rub symbols." There were four mini spy designs; each one was either blue, white, or yellow, and could be either an Autobot or a Decepticon, making for a total of 24 variants. The toys were originally from Japan's "Mecha Warriors" toy line; their names are listed above.)
"Sky Dasher" - Powerdasher Silver/Black/Red jet
"F-1 Dasher" - Powerdasher Silver/Blue/Red rocket car
"Drill Dasher" - Powerdasher Silver/Black/Yellow drill
(Powerdashers were available only from the S.T.A.R.S. program. When you sent in robot points for a Powerdasher, you got one of the three different forms, at random. No individual names for the Powerdashers were given; the names given above are Takara's pre-Transformers Diaclone toy names.)
Camshaft - Omnibot Grey Mazda Savannah RX-7
Downshift - Omnibot White Toyota Celica XX
Overdrive - Omnibot Red Ferrari BB
(Omnibots were available only from the S.T.A.R.S. program.)

EUROPEAN AUTOBOTS
Ironhide, Prowl, Sunstreaker, Trailbreaker, Wheeljack, Powerdasher, and the Omnibots were not available in Europe at this time. A green version of Trailbreaker was reportedly sold in some parts of Europe, though it's likely that the toy is actually Hoist (see 1985 entry) in a Trailbreaker box.

JAPANESE AUTOBOTS
Because the Transformers toy line was not introduced in Japan until 1985, there were no toys released this year.

DECEPTICONS
Megatron (Decepticon leader) Grey Walther P-38 "U.N.C.L.E. Special"

"FX-1 Type" - Mini Spy Blue/White/Yellow Mazda FX-1
"Porsche Type" - Mini Spy Blue/White/Yellow Porsche
(The Mini Spies were free premiums packaged with the Mini Bots; see the Autobot Mini Spies for a description.)

EUROPEAN DECEPTICONS
Megatron(!) was not available in Europe at this time.

JAPANESE DECEPTICONS
(Destrons) Because the Transformers toy line was not introduced in Japan until 1985, there were no toys released this year.

1985 - Transformers Year 2

(The Transformers are a big hit, and Hasbro rolls out the reinforcements from Cybertron. Hooray!)

(Jumpstarters have pull-back motors that move the vehicle mode. The vehicle then "jumps" and automatically transforms into the robot mode. There is an error in each toy's tech-spec cards, as Topspin and Twin Twist's pictures were swapped in a printing mistake. As best as can be determined, however, Topspin is the toy with the white torso, and Twin Twist is the toy with the two drills in front.)
AUTOBOTS
Blaster Red ghetto blaster
Grapple Orange crane
Hoist Green Toyota 4WD Wrecker tow-truck
Inferno Red fire engine
Perceptor Red microscope
Red Alert White Lamborghini Countach LP500S (Fire Escort)

Slag - Dinobot Silver/grey triceratops
Sludge - Dinobot Silver/grey apatosaurus
Snarl - Dinobot Silver/grey stegosaurus
Swoop - Dinobot Silver/grey pteranadon
Grimlock - Dinobot Commander Silver/grey tyrannosaurus

Beachcomber - Mini Bot Blue dune buggy
Cosmos - Mini Bot Green UFO
Powerglide - Mini Bot Red A-10 Thunderbolt II airplane

EUROPEAN AUTOBOTS
Blaster and Swoop were not available in Europe at this time. Ironhide, Prowl, Sunstreaker, Trailbreaker, and Wheeljack (see 1984 entries) were released.

All of the American Autobots from 1984 and 1985 were released, with the following exceptions: Ironhide, Ratchet, Sunstreaker, Gears, Beachcomber, Cosmos, Powerglide, Seaspray, Warpath, Powerdasher, Jetfire, Omega Supreme, Roadbuster, Whirl, Topspin, and Twin Twist. I suspect the reason for some of the omissions is because they were not made by Takara... Also of interest is that the Japanese Perceptor shoots missiles out of its viewer.

(The reason for the distinction between the Insecticons and the Deluxe Insecticons are (1) general color scheme and (2) different Japanese designs. The regular Insecticons are from Takara's Diaclone toy line, and the deluxe Insecticons are from Bandai's Kiko Chutai Beetras line.)
Astrotrain - Triple Changer Purple/Black shuttle/train
Blitzwing - Triple Changer Purple/Beige MIG-25 jet/tank

EUROPEAN DECEPTICONS
Shockwave and the Deluxe Insecticons were not available in Europe at this time. Megatron was released (see 1984 entry).

Soundwave was packaged with Rumble, and included a pretend microphone, headphone, and cords. The Japanese cassettes were sold separately and came with plastic carrying cases.
Megatron (Destron leader) Flat Grey Walther P-38 (The Japanese Megatron shot plastic pellets and came with a sword. It did not include the stock, silencer, and scope of the American version.)
Astrotrain - Triple Changer White/Black shuttle/train (Only the first release of the Japanese Astrotrain was white. Later releases were purple/black, like the American one.)

1986 - Transformers Year 3

(TRANSFORMERS: THE MOVIE was released in August 1986. Two years in the making, it featured the voices of Orson Welles [in his final movie role], Leonard Nimoy, Robert Stack, Eric Idle, and Judd Nelson, along with some very beautiful animation. For various reasons, the movie was not released in Japan until 1988; instead, "Scramble City" is released, a half-hour cartoon to bridge the pre- and post-movie cartoon episodes. And of course, having the movie meant there must be a whole new set of toys to play with...)

1987 - Transformers Year 4

(The movie is over, but the toys continue. Subgroups prove to be a big hit as Hasbro present Headmasters and Targetmasters. The American cartoon draws to a close with the three-part "Rebirth" story, while the Japanese story presses on with an all-new story called "Transformers: Headmasters." It starts after the third season of the American cartoon and details the origins of the Headmasters and Targetmasters.)

1989 - Transformers Year 6

(Transformers sales are starting to go into a decline. TransFans think the low quality of the toys might be at fault, but Hasbro executives think the success of Galoob's Micro Machines is the culprit. So while the Pretenders multiplied, they were accompanied by the Midgetmas -- er, Micromasters. Meanwhile, the Japanese Transformers toy line takes a radical departure from the rest of the world, with toys spun off of the "Transformers: Victory" animated series.)

1990 - Transformers Year 7

(Hasbro panics and introduce the Action Masters, Transformers toys that don't transform [they look neat, though], while the Micromasters take over the rest of the toy line. The desperate measures don't work, and 1990 is the final year of Transformers in American toy stores. Meanwhile, the European line continues to survive with more toys and reissued "classics," while Japan discovers the Micromasters in a big way. Of the next Japanese animated series, "Transformers: Zone," only one episode was ever released as an OAV [original animated video])

JAPANESE DECEPTICONS
Surprisingly enough, there were NO Japanese Decepticons released at all in 1991. Considering how many Japanese Autobots were released, this is more than a tad unfair, I think...

1992 - Transformers Year 9

(Just when American TransFans have given up on the toy line, Hasbro surprises everyone at the end of 1992 by finally starting the "Transformers: Generation 2" toy line. Sure, the initial toys are recolored versions of the old ones, but no one is complaining. Europe's the real place to be, however, as fans there get some renamed Japanese toys, and a fair dose of original Transformers to play with.)

1995 - Transformers Year 12

(Building up their nerve, Hasbro introduces more original Transformers designs. The "Generation 2" monicker is dropped from American packages but retained in Europe. Biggest complaint from TransFans are rumors of wanton "redesign" of classic characters into new forms [Megatron as a sports car, Jetfire as a Cyberjet, etc.]. Hasbro replies by moving the Transformers toy line to their Kenner subsidy, who promptly stops all toy releases admist rumors of reportedly for major toy innovations in 1996. Some "redesigned" classic characters suddenly disappear and become VERY scarce as a result... Also, Europe gets a few toys that America doesn't, for no known reason.)

(The Transformers toy line, under the care of Kenner, is completely reborn under the new name -- Beast Wars! It's the most radical change ever; Autobots and Decepticons are replaced by Maximals and Predacons, robots that turn into animals and insects. Some long-time TransFans gnash their teeth at the liberties taken, but Hasbro/Kenner are estatic as the toys fly off store shelves, and the new computer-generated animated series excites most fans.
